Heiwa Shuzo, Wakayama Prefecture

The predecessor of Heiwa Shuzo was established in 1928 by Tamotsu Yamamoto in Kainan City located in the northern part if Kii Peninsular. In the ensuing years, the brewery faced challenges after challenges especially so during the Second World War and almost went out of business. Even after the war, the brewery did not get permisssion to reopen which led to second generation Yasumasa Yamamoto petitioning the Diet (Japanese Parliament) in an emotional speech of his wish to brew saké in the peaceful post war era. His plea was heard and the brewery was allowed to reopen and brew saké again. It is this desire to brew saké in the time of peace that led to the brewery adopting the name 'Heiwa' 平和 meaning peace in 1952.

Heiwa Shuzo is surrounded by beautiful mountains where pure and clear spring water is abundant in the Koyasan area, a famous world heritage site in Wakayama Prefecture. It is a land of fruits and it is said that there is no fruit that cannot be found in Wakayama, that is at least in the Japanese context.  The fruits used in the brewing of the fruit liqueurs under the Tsuruume brand are all planted by themselves thus ensuring the quality of not only the saké but the fruits that go into the brewing of the liqueurs.

Kamon Tsuru Ume

Kamon means crest and it represents the identity and symbol of the family.  It is usually placed at the arch of the gateway into the home and sometimes also on ceremonial equipment and on formal dresses.

Heiwa Shuzo's Kamon pictured above is the Tsuru - crane (flying) and Ume - flower of the plum tree, both of which are the symbols of good luck.

All of the items in the Tsuru Ume range carry this kamon.

The beautiful and colourful labels and stickers on the different Tsuruume range makes for an interesting collection !
